The 9 Step Engineering Process

The engineering process is a set of structured steps that engineers must follow to create and construct a product. There are many different models of the engineering process, with less or more steps however, most follow the same sequence. In this article, we’ll review a 9-step engineering design process that engineers employ to solve specific issues.

The first step in the process of engineering design is to define the problem. This is an important step because a failure to clearly and accurately define the problem could stall projects in later stages of the design cycle. Most often, the solution to a specific issue will be apparent in this phase. When students were asked to come up with the best way to attach their school lunch hooks to the desks’ bottoms They came up with a simple hook.

In the next step, requirements analysis is performed to identify the specifics of the client’s needs and available resources. This will help you develop a clear set of project requirements and constraints. For example If a client requires their new product to be able to hold 20 pounds an engineer will estimate how much weight the system will be able to hold and what the size of the hook should be in order to ensure it will hold the entire student’s lunches.

The next phase is design synthesis, or design planning. This is where the particulars are set and a detailed design of the product is made. This includes the creation of inputs, outputs and interconnections of the various modules that form the overall system. The tools used during this phase include Gantt and Pert charts as well as spreadsheets for loading resources, drawings, sketches and prototype models.
